Graham Steed trained in Agricultural Science and Soil Physics (PhD) at LaTrobe University then spent 16 years in research and research management with the Victorian Department of Agriculture (Australia). He specialised in sustainable farming systems and led and managed statewide and national research portfolios in farming systems and natural resource management.

He set up G R Steed & Associates Pty Ltd in 1998 and has managed complex national R&D programmes for research investors including the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Malting Barley Quality Improvement Programmme, National Water Commision, and Rural Industries RDC. He has also worked closely with research providers, industry and government to ensure that stakeholder's returns on and from R&D are maximised.

Graham is now also consulting to the University of Melbourne on project development for funding organisations including the Australian Research Council. He is also co-ordinating an international collaborative project on Water Futures for Sustainable Cities for the Univeristas 21 group of universities.
